Scientists can create molecular holograms

   Scientists can create molecular holograms
Soon it will be possible to get volume images of each molecule with a help of a scientific break-through made by Swiss scientists.
The developers assume that the novelty will be of interest for biologists who study interaction of various complex proteins.
Hologram is a complex palette record of an object reflection while a laser ray effects on it. After the light reflection a hologram recreates an object with an exact repetition of a wave length emitted by the object creating an impression of a real three-dimensional object.
Over a period of years there was a disadvantage while creating a hologram – due to interferance during the process of an image creation a second image appeared inevitably applied over the first so that the hologram produced a “double” effect.

In most cases a “twin-image” doesn’t influence greatly the result image and can be ignored, but if a source from which the hologram is projected is placed close to the object recorded, then the ‘twin” can deteriorate the hologram quality and resolution.
This fact limits considerably hologram application for microscopic objects – viruses, proteins and so on.
Not so long ago physics have worked out a new technology for elimination of a secondary image with the help of x-rays but in the light they do not always work as there length wave is less then the wave length of light emission.
Nowadays scientists from Zurich University (Switzerland) Hans-Verner Fink and Tatiana Latychevskaya have solved this problem and holography method works irrispectively of the light source.
According to Tatiana Latychevskaya, after it was noticed that the second image maked some parts of the hologram lighter it became possible to determine the image borders. After that a spe-cial computer program has been worked out capable of recognizing these areas and estimating their influence onto the nearby image areas. After that the lightest areas were deleted from the image. This process was repated several times till the second image became degraded.
The inventors hope that with the help of the given technology it will be possible to create precise holograms of very small objects in order to study them afterwards.
